Friday: Father's Day is this Sunday, 6/16- we do Gift Certificates. Housy is at 6,420cfs (needs to be under 2,000 to fish), Although it's looking like 4 weekends in a row w/ Housy way too high, small streams/brooks should be fishable by Sat or Sun. During the brief window of under 2,000cfs Housy flows last week, we had 3 days of excellent fishing near the banks with big dries. Davy Wotton Midge & Wet Fly Clinic October 5th & 6th, 2013 9AM-5PM
Clinic will be two days- 1 of Midge fishing, and 1 of Wet Flies. Wotton is most famous for being the modern champion of Wet Fly fishing (he produced the "Wet Fly Ways" DVD), but he is equally passionate & skilled at Midge fishing. The way Davy does it includes a lot of subsurface fishing with patterns in #14-18 also, and the flies, rigging & techniques he uses will work on any trout stream in the world (midges hatch 12 months a year on 100% of trout streams). When it comes to Wet Flies, Davy is the undisputed champion, he is the most knowledgeable living Wet Fly man in the world, and the techniques he learned in Europe were developed over centuries of fishing for wild brown trout, so they work anywhere. Clinic is 2 days, 9A-5PM, includes lunch. Call 860-672-1010 to book a spot, cost is $300, paid in full in advance, no refunds- clinic runs rain or shine.

Free Housatonic Upper TMA/C&R Orientation w/ Torrey, Sat 4/13/13 at 10AM
Our most popular event every year, I'll once again be doing a driving tour of the Upper Housy TMA/C&R Section, covering from the Rt 7/Rt 4 concrete bridge all the way upstream to Push-Em-Up. Spring is FINALLY here, making this a great time to learn the river. Meet at the store, and then we will carpool from there. We will make multiple stops along the way, and you will be taught pool names, accesses, hatches, high water/low water spots, trout stocking/holdovers/wild trout info, seasonal changes, effective flies, history of the TMA & PCB's, etc. This is a flexible event where I encourage lots of questions. Bring a pad & pen so you can take notes, and also bring your gear so you can fish afterwards.

FREE Housatonic Bull's Bridge TMA/C&R area Orientation w/ Torrey, March 23 at 10AM
I'll be doing another FREE Housatonic Bull's Bridge TMA/C&R area Orientation (on Rt 7 about 15 miles South of our shop). Meet at the store, and then we will carpool from there- all are welcome to attend. This lower TMA gets very little fishing pressure overall, and holds some of the biggest trout in the Housatonic. It's a great option for those of you who live closer to this section, or want an escape from the more popular Upper C&R area by shop on crowded weekends when conditions and weather are a little too nice. Some of the access points require light hiking up to about a mile, so please be in reasonable physical shape and bring proper footwear. We will make multiple stops, and you will be taught pool names, accesses, hatches, high water/low water spots, trout stocking/holdovers/wild trout info, seasonal changes, effective flies, history of the TMA & PCB's, etc. This is a flexible event where I encourage lots of questions. Free Tying Housy Caddis Class w/ Torrey...
I’ve been fishing the Housatonic River for a long time now, going on almost 28 years this season. As you might imagine, I’ve found some favorite flies over the years that I find work great on the Housy & elsewhere too. The Housy is a Caddis river for sure, and they are a quite common bug in most trout streams I’ve fished. I’ll show you some patterns that I’ve found to be pretty deadly, from larva to pupa to dries. I catch some of my biggest trout at Caddis time, it gets the trout (especially the big ones that usually are only catchable on big streamers) in a feeding frenzy. This clinic should up your score on trout this Spring. Show up with your vise, basic tools, and some assorted threads, and I will provide the materials & hooks. Please have at least basic tying skills. You will also have a great opportunity to pick my brain about how I approach Caddis hatches on the Housy and elsewhere. -Torrey

Free Tying Basic Pike Flies Class w/ Keith Godfrey, Sat. 2/9/13 10AM
Those of you who were on our HRO FaceBook page in 2012 are probably familiar with our guide Keith, we’ve posted numerous pictures of him, his clients, and his pretty girlfriend holding up some impressive Housy pike (some over 40”). Keith is probably the most dialed in of all our guides at catching Housy pike on flies, and this class will focus on some basic pike patterns that a tyer of average abilities can make. Show up with your vise, basic tools, and some assorted heavy threads, and Keith will provide the materials & hooks. Please have at least basic tying skills. This is a great opportunity to also pick his brain about his approach to pike on the fly. Keith is an accomplished tyer, you will definitely learn some good stuff.

Take a close look at the two pictures of the Early Brown Stonefly nymphs from the Housy on 3/9, there were as many along the river snowbanks as I have ever seen, and lots of winged early brown stonefly nymphsEarly Black Stonefly adults too in many spots. As I write this we are experiencing unusually good Housy fishing conditions for March- moderate, clear flows with that fishy greenish tint. Often March sees murky flows 1,5000-3,000cfs, but not this year. Get out and fish, conditions this good are truly a gift, and most of the highs have moved into the 40’s now. March is a quality over quantity month, and fishing pressure is usually on the light side- there are always spots with elbow room if you are willing to take a short walk. Nymphs will catch more fish now, but medium to large streamers can connect you to a true trophy if you are persistent and fish them slow and deep. Focus on the softer water in pools and deeper runs, and the most productive time of day is late morning thru late afternoon. It is the most comfortable then, water temps are the highest, and both the trout and the insects are most active. The deadliest nymph in March is a larger #8-10 Golden or brown Stonefly, even when you see lots of the smaller #12-16 Early Stones on the banks. Good trailer nymphs include #10-16 Princes, Pheasant Tails, Black Copper John’s, Hare’s Ears, Scuds, Egg Flies, Twenty Inchers, or whatever your generic “confidence nymph” happens to be. I have personally done better with these more suggestive patterns than with exact imitations of the Early Stones, dunno why. March Housy trout seem to average bigger than any other time of year, with 20”+ browns and bows not at all unheard of. Again, streamers and also bigger stones seem to produce the majority of the real trophies. Make sure you have a CT 2013 fishing license before venturing out, as we do not have a license machine. You can purchase one online by clicking here. Most CT Town Halls also sell them Mondays thru Fridays.

We have several paid clinics that still have some openings, check our "Events" section for details, they are also listed on our FaceBook page. Keep your eye out for some "Fishing with Torrey" days to be scheduled for this Spring on some Sundays. They will be full day (about 8 hour) outings with him, limited to groups of four fishermen at $100 per person. Call, message or email the store with your name and daytime phone number if you want to get on the list. Still have a few slots open in Adam's "A-2-Z Streamer Clinic" on March 16th, he will teach you various methods to cover most situations you will encounter, on water big and small. The annual two day clinic with master angler Davy Wotton in mid-May filled up fast, so due to popular demand I scheduled a 2nd one on the weekend of October 5th/6th- it will be "Midge & Wet Fly Fishing", one full day of each. Davy is probably the best living wet fly fisherman, and is also expert at Midge fishing. Former HRO guide Aaron Jasper (producer of 3 best-selling nymphing DVD's, dozens of published articles, and owner of troutpredator.com) will do 2 nymphing clinics for us this Spring- a half-day Indicator Nymphing class on April 27th, and a full-day "Master Nymphing" clinic that will cover both Indicator and Tight-Line European methods on May 4th (it's 1/2 full already). Call the shop at 860-672-1010 to sign up for any of these informative clinics.

Don't forget, you'll need a license, if you haven't got one, click here, we don't have a machine at the store!
