GLX SERIES

When you get to the river
(or lake, or salt flat) and pull out a GLX fly rod,
you’re in for a different experience. For starters,
these rods are 25% lighter than rods of comparable
strength, so even the simple act of removing it from the
truck is more enjoyable. Once rigged, you’ll find
the fast-action, medium stiffness and progressive taper
help you throw out beautiful high-speed loops with
newfound ease. After one of these beautiful casts,
you’ll get the opportunity to enjoy its incredibly
sensitive tip fighting the fish you couldn’t quite
reach before. It may seem presumptive to suggest you
can’t experience this with someone else’s fly
rod, but quite frankly no other rod maker has GLX
graphite. Not even close. Basically, whether you’re
an expert fly angler who wants every last bit of his
ability to shine through, or an intermediate angler who
wants to improve his abilities practically overnight, the
GLX is the rod you need.

Our 9-foot
10-weight is the second most popular choice
among saltwater anglers. This rod is designed to
handle big flies, size 2 and above, and is
capable of pushing those large flies at fairly
reasonable distances. Also good for weighted
flies and heavily weighted sinking fly lines, it
comes with a larger diameter fighting-butt for
playing bigger fish. This is also an excellent
light-duty tarpon rod. After all, they’re

As rod
materials have improved and rods have become
lighter and stronger, the #6 has taken a back
seat to the 5-weight. It’s now the “in
between” size for the transition from trout
fishing to warmwater species. Capable of
remarkably long casts, the 1086 also has the
ability to make delicate
presentations—especially in windy
conditions where a #5 can’t quite handle
it. This is a good streamer rod, and it
admirably casts the oversized, wind-resistant
poppers, stoneflies and hoppers so popular on
the larger streams of the high desert.

Here’s
a truly great rod for heavy-duty freshwater
applications and light-duty saltwater use. It
casts like a bullet in the wind and has the
power to handle all salmon species. It’s
the rod of choice for flats fishing when the
wind comes up, and it will pull a big redfish
back to the boat in a heartbeat. Bass fly
rodders love this model because it has the power
to handle the large, bulky deer hair flies and
poppers so popular for taking big largemouths
out of lily pads and heavy cover. When the river
gets a freshet and waters rise, the steelheader
turns to the #9 for heavier lines and larger
flies. It’s a great all-around big fish
rod. | |

FR1388/9-3 Length: 11'6" Line: 8 or 9 standard WF
line Pieces: 3 Travel |
This is
chief rod designer Steve Rajeff’s favorite
steelhead rod. We categorize it as a two-hander,
but it’s really a very long one-handed rod
with an extended fighting butt. The extra handle
length allows you the option of fishing it in a
conventional one-handed manner, or, when the
situation dictates, with two hands. Because of
this unique capability, it’s designed to be
fished with a standard 8 or 9-weight line (not a
Spey line as with most of our two-handers).
It’s an outstanding light steelhead rod for
open river fishing and it provides incredible
line control and distance. GLX graphite makes it
unbelievably light—about the weight of most
10-foot #8s—so it can be cast one-handed
all day long with very little fatigue.

GL3 SERIES
Undoubtedly the best
performance value on the market, these rods are extremely
forgiving and very lightweight, actually helping to
minimize the most common mistake in casting: the tailing
loop. Designed with a multi-taper tip, they feel slightly
stiffer than our other rod families, generating high
line-speed with a slightly wider loop. That extra
stiffness also makes them quite powerful, capable of
making nice long, accurate casts. Some rod companies
charge twice what a GL3 will cost you. But if you’re
looking for a high-performance graphite rod that will let
you cast like you know you can, none of them will
outperform a GL3.

As we said back
in the GLX section, the 9-foot 6-weight was once
the standard for western trout anglers. This GL3
version offers all the same great
characteristics of the GLX rod, but with the
GL3's stiffer tip, there's going to be a little
more line speed to turn over bushy,
wind-resistant flies.

This rod covers
a variety of situations where a more powerful
rod is useful. Great with streamers and sinking
lines for trout or smallmouth bass, it can also
venture onto the saltwater flats for small
bonefish. | |

The 9-foot
8-weight is the number one choice among
saltwater anglers for flats fishing. Probably
because it capably handles the large, weighted
flies used for those fish, yet feels like it's a
6-weight. | |

Since most of us
don't live on saltwater flats, it would be
inconsiderate not to offer the rod described

Mega Length: 9' Line: 8 or
9 Pieces: 3 Travel | |
This 9-foot
3-piece is a very affordable, very pleasing
saltwater flats rod. It’ll take on anything
from bonefish to redfish to snook. And it’s
quite powerful, yet easy to load with a #8 line
for most situations, or a #9 when bigger flies
are required or the wind is blowing.
